I am an advanced certified Rolfer trained at the Rolf Institute in Boulder Colorado.  I have maintained a full time Rolfing practice since 1989 and practiced a variety of massage forms for ten years before that.  I've helped many people heal from a wide variety of issues. My training and experience have equipped me especially well to provide effective rehab for aging bodies.

I have a home office on the windward side of Oahu and see clients monthly in Colorado.

Aloha, I’m Jim Lawson

My Approach

No matter what issue a person comes in with, the first question I ask is where is this person holding their breath without realizing it?  Decompressing breathing is fundamental to restoring full function.  That’s probably what I’m best at.  Most people have no idea how contorted and restricted their breathing is and the impact it has on their body and overall well-being.

I like getting to the bottom of things. As breath releases, the hold that the body has on itself loosens its grip.  Whatever is plaguing you comes closer to the surface and is more able to move.  This may be related to joints, muscle tissues, body systems, intolerances of various kinds, auto immune disorders, ptsd, old injuries, surgeries, physical or psychological abuse, etc.  We all carry unfinished business of some sort.  People are amazed as they start to feel the depth and freedom they did not know was there to be had.  I move through  layers of accumulated trauma expressed and held in fascia.  The more superficial layers have to do with our personal history, deeper layers are formed by ancestral conditioning, the deepest, are perhaps what we bring with us when we arrive.

The key is engaging and activating core strength.  I chuckle when people tell me their trainer says they need to strengthen their core.  I nudge cores for a living and I can tell you your core is immensely strong already.  The problem is, the core is habitually bracing, pulling inward, literally holding it all together, held in a steady state.  That is why we usually can’t feel it or use it.  You can only feel things that fluctuate, like temperature.  You know temperature because it goes up and down.  If it were constant, it would not register in your senses. That’s’ why we don’t feel our depth, because it’s frozen in place up in the back of our diaphragm, behind our sternum, around the periphery of our thoracic outlet, deep in our pelvic floor, the soles of our feet and even behind our eyeballs.

Hardheadedness is not a metaphor.  This is the game I play, fishing for really big fish down deep.  Maybe you just want your back to quit hurting and that’s fine, you can have that, but to make a real, lasting impact,  you can’t just go halfway.  Fixing backs, necks and such is great but this is a growth process, for the body.  It accelerates personal evolution.  That’s why I love doing it.  I’ve seen nothing else like it.

If this resonates with you, what I recommend is to start with a free phone consultation. I look forward to exploring your history with you. If it feels right, just try one session. You are not risking much and lot can happen in a short time.

As an advanced certified rolfer, I’ve been trained and highly influenced in breath and movement work with  Emilie Conrad and Susan Harper of Continuum Movement.  I also draw inspiration from my Aikido practice and Contact Improvisation.

My focus is on healing unresolved trauma, beginning with decompressing dense fascial structure. Fascia is a primary factor in health and aging.  It is a factor that is largely unrecognized in medicine, even to this day. My method includes the work that I do but also describes how fascia works in living bodies and how it is crucial to our health, longevity and well-being.
